The butterflies clung to the netting anxiously. They've been awake for quite sometime and I'm sure the afternoon breeze was egging them on, shaking them from their stupor. They fluttered their orange-colored wings excitedly. They can't wait to feel the air underneath their wings. They danced inside the netted baskets, bumping into each other, feeling each others antennae, feet and wingtips. Nobody seemed to mind. After all, they have a singular goal - to get out and soar.
When the netting was untied and lifted, they were hesitant at first. If they dare to move forward, will there be another wall of netting up ahead? But a sudden gust of wind blew their doubts away. In that moment, they knew they were free. And as if they were this giant bird with wings outstretched, they soared up into the air. So high. I never knew butterflies could fly that high. They almost covered the sun. I watched them, an army of butterflies taking flight. They didn't scatter in every direction. Instead, they took one path in unison. Up and away, they went. Until I couldn't see any hint of them.
I blinked back tears. How majestic and fleeting they were. I lingered my eyes in the sky for a little while longer. And there I saw, a single butterfly gliding gracefully above. I whispered in earnest for it to hear: "Please...please don't forget to tell our beloved Kai we love and miss him. Always."
